Solicited Grant Proposal for Howard University Science, Engineering, and Mathematics Program (activity, 2012)

To: Dean Chalmers, Office of Research and Innovation, Howard University Science, Engineering, and Mathematics Program

Date: May 2, 2012

Subject: Information on the Department of Defense Grant Opportunity

As per request, here is a summary of the recent grant opportunity being offered by the Department of Defense (DoD) Research and Education Program for Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority-Serving Institutions (HBCU/MI) for FY 2012.

The DoD recently posted a grant opportunity that will help enhance research programs and capabilities in scientific and engineering disciplines.  They intend to award approximately $25 million to HBCU/MI; from that total, $125,000/year will go to supporting each school’s research projects for a total period of 36 months.  Additionally, an annual budget restriction of $200,000 is included within the grant opportunity should we require extra equipment or instrumentation.

With this grant, we continue to enhance the academic abilities of our institution by developing stronger science and engineering programs. Through stronger programs, HUSEM will remain a competitive research university for many years to come and thus will continue to attract exceptional students interested in math and science research.

As institutions of higher education eligible for assistance under Title III or V of the Higher Education Act of 1965, we already qualify for the grant.  In order to obtain the grant, a 25-page proposal must be submitted no later than 4:00P.M. EST on July 11, 2012.

I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience and moving forward with the proposal.

Regards,

Seth Ford
